Love it! by Annie
This is my first Mac and it’s great. I’ve been a Windows users. It takes a couple of weeks to get used the command key and the layout of the keyboard but it’s the best machine I’ve had. It starts up and shuts down very quickly. It’s look great. It’s light and thin. Leopard is great. With the purchase of Parallels, I’ve loaded XP onto the machine and have Windows and Office available whenever needed.

Good computer, but overpriced and unnecessary for some users by Jason
I am giving this product three stars because I had a fair amount of issues with this computer right out of the box, and for the price of $2500, I don’t feel very comfortable about that.

Several days after buying this computer, I noticed that I wasn’t able to click open items in my menu bar, while I was able to click open items in my dock. I called apple and a representative said that it sounded like a might be having software problems, and that I might want to consider returning it to Amazon. So I did return it to Amazon, for a replacement.

Amazon has a very good policy regarding situations like this by the way. They sent me a new computer within four days, and told me that I would just need to send the original computer back to them within the next thirty days. They paid for the shipping, which was nearly $40. I haven’t been told if they received it yet though, but if that thing got lost, this could become a nightmare for me.

Anyway, within the first few days, the replacement computer froze. I did an “Archive and Install” as a result. One day later, my mouse was completely unable to click open icons on my desktop. I was instructed to create a new user account as a result. This did help, but on the original user account I was still never able to click open items on the desktop, which doesn’t make me feel comfortable.

Another day later, my mouse cursor would not move at all, whatsoever, even though I had done all of my software updates, so there was no software that needed to be updated. This time I took it to the Apple store. I was told it was fine, but the next morning, one of my applications that I use a lot, began quitting on me. The computer told me over and over, to re-start, but that didn’t solve the problem at all. Eventually, Apple support helped me, but by this point I was at my wit’s end!

Additionally, I have yet another issue that I am going to have to call Apple about today, regarding the functioning of my F1 through F12 keys.

Since owning these two, MacBook Pro 17 inch computers, I have had to call Apple’s Tech support approximately 15 to 20 times, in addition to going to the Apple store a couple of times. For $2500, this doesn’t make me feel comfortable, and I am really beginning to question whether I really need an Apple computer or not, especially a MacBook Pro 17 inch.

I don’t doubt for a second that this is an awesome computer, and that many people are in love with it. All I am saying, is that my experience with these two 17 inch MacBook Pro’s, has really made me re-think and re-think again whether or not I want to keep this computer, and continue using Apple products.

I am a law student. The reason that I bought this computer is because, I heard that Apple was very stable, very easy to use, free of viruses, ect. I knew I wanted a laptop, and I knew I wanted a 17 inch display. But that only leaves me with one option, namely, the 17 inch MacBook Pro, which costs between $2500 and $2900!

For that kind of money, I could literally buy three other highly rated laptops, or a highly rated laptop, and a highly rated desktop, literally, which by the way, is something that I am seriously considering doing.

Amazon has been very nice and good to me during this time. The only criticism that I have about Amazon, is that nearly every single person that I talk to in their customer service phone support, is from either India or the Phillappines, and as such, there is a real disconnect linguistically, and it is extremely frustrating. For a company that says it cares so much about customer service, they might want to address this issue. The same conversation that would normally take ten minutes, with a person in the U.S. takes about thirty five minutes with a person from over seas on the Amazon customer service phone support. Very frustrating.

Is this a great computer? For plenty of people it probably is. But you might want to think long and hard about why you want to buy MBP before you spend this kind of money.

By the way, the keyboard has some pro’s and con’s.

Pro’s: Silent, responsive.

Con’s: so flat and tight, that my fingers frequently hit the wrong keys, and this causes me to type substantially slower… and my fingers are long skinny piano playing fingers, not short fat fingers.

I wonder if Apple’s devotion to simple elegant design, is compromising their functionality…. I think there could certainly be a case made for that.

I believe the Apple lover’s out there that say their Apple computers are really great, but my experience just hasn’t made it crystal clear for me, why I would spend the extra money on one.

Love it, rock solid performance by Tivo Manic
I’ve never owned a Mac before, but when faced with the option of upgrading my current laptop to either Windows Vista or Mac OS, it was a no brainer. Vista has the opposite effect of upgrading due to its increase in speed/ram requirements, and laptops running at the required speed and ram (2+ GHz and 4G ram seem average) cost a pretty penny more than desktops. So I will leave Vista for the desktops, but I’m loving my Macbook Pro. The features that are uber nice are: break-away power plug, already had to use this feature multiple times! Blue tooth included (at least in this model), and backlit keyboard. You’d have to really pay some change to get these with a standard Vista-based laptop. Not to mention, this laptop WILL run Windows XP if I decided to go back. Overall, I’m impressed with the OS and how everything (including utility software) is included from the start and how it is integrated into the OS. Very nice. Also, the thing doesn’t make a noise most of the time.
