Good price, mixed review by An engineer
This is a decent color laser printer at a good price. In terms of price, the printer with toner cartridges sells for little more than the toner cartridges alone. Maybe they are buying the toner refill business by giving away the printer itself. Another plus: it connects to my router so I can share it between my wireless Mac laptop and my PC desktop (even when the PC is asleep), which is great. Now the bad news. It’s a lot bulker than it looks just by seeing the picture. Make sure it fits your room and you’re comfortable with the weight before you buy. Second, the quality is no better than the Canon Ink jet printer I replaced. Part of this is because the default setting on the HL 4040 is 600 dpi. To get the higher resolution, you have to tweak the defaults. So it you really need a color laser, this may be a great choice. But if you’re expecting it to be better than a laser jet in terms of print quality, you’ll be disappointed.

Nothing but problems by R. Silverman
Bought this printer on recommendation from other purchasers on Amazon. When it finally arrived, it never worked. Brother support was worthless! They kept offering to send me base units to solve my problem. After two exchanges, I assumed that the problem must have been with the drum unit. Brother kept on assuming it was the base unit. I gave up and sent it back.

A terrible shame since I have used Brother monochrome laser printers and MFCs for several years without a problem. Lesson to us all: When buying a color laser printer there are no cheap alternatives.

As good as you can get for the price by D. J. McCullough
I was a bit concerned by other’s reviews regarding the edges curling but tried an in-store demo prior to purchasing it at the best price I could find- here at Amazon, and didn’t find it to be a huge deal. I do find there is a slight curl but for me it seems go away as the pages sit on my desk and the color is far more superior to other demos I tested in the same price range so I’d definitely recommend this printer.

Brother HL-4040Ccn by G. Peck
Good value. Printer was easy to install: Remove from the box; install toner cartridges; connect to my network. The installation CD made it easy to connect each of my computers to the printer (I run both Windows XP Pro and Vista Home). Print quality is very good. Printer goes to “sleep” mode when not being used and is fairly quick to change to print mode when a page is sent to it. Delivery was quicker than the estimated time. I’m guessing it was sent by truck because the well packed box was too large to come by FedEx or UPS.
